I had a few who felt like I was trying to pry into their personal lives, and it helped to explain that they could choose what story to share with their student, and that if they want to share something less personal that's perfectly fine.Īfter looking at a quick synopsis of Hey Kiddo, I wonder if this assignment wouldn't go particularly well with that book.Īnyway, I might still have some materials if you're interested. I do suggest that you send a quick email to parents giving them a heads up before you send the kids home to do their interviews. I got thank you letters from kids and their relatives who felt like this was an opportunity to grow closer as a family. I really loved this assignment because it helped to get these kids talking to their parents or grandparents. She was a good student from a very strict Asian household (can't remember the country) and her fear was genuine, so I didn't press the issue. Kids who didn't do the interview lost points on that assignment, but not on the final story - with the exception of one girl who was terrified to the point of tears of having to talk to her parents. I picked an interview of Captain Sulley, but you might find something more modern. I needed a backup story for the kids to write who didn't do their homework and interview someone as I had asked. I teach dialogue writing when I teach creative writing because it helps to get students to stop summarizing and tell the story as if they are living that moment. I did pre-lessons in interview techniques (found a good YouTube video and made an EdPuzzle assignment out of it), taught simple story structure (identify the conflict in your relative's story, introduce the conflict in your writing, struggle with the conflict, solve the conflict), and dialogue writing.

When I taught middle school English, I had a lot of success with a narrative unit where I had kids interview a member of their family about a difficult time they went through, and then write their family member's story from a first person perspective.
